Favorite Photo Friday

So hard to choose...and Friday isn't over.  If the sun stays out we'll have more pictures after the girls' naps.  I am really hoping Sunflower will actually sleep.  She is fighting a cold and needs the extra sleep so badly.

But while she tries and Sweet Pea sleeps, I get to play with pictures.

A Club, a Compass, and a Child..or Two

Last weekend my facebook photo club made of all local photographers played a game of Photo Poker.  The way it works is the first person posts a picture with two elements in it...say a flower and pearls.  The next person has to use pearls and something else in their next photo.

Which lead to me asking my husband how to locate and unlock our bullets.
And taking pictures of random objects like globes and our fabulous new Chinese stacking blocks (a generous, much loved gift from a friend for Chinese New Year.)
But even though I didn't even use a texture that second time I was actually never the first to post and at the end of the evening we found out those that were the fastest had switched to...gasp...shooting in JPEG and not editting their photos at all!  Granted they still created some impressive work, but we all thought maybe while we were shooting with intent, we didn't really want to lose all creativity and thought.  So one very talented, creative member came up with another way to play.  Photo Poker Relay.

Same concept, but you knew who was to go next and you had 24 hours to post your picture.  Today was my turn.  I was given a compass to incoorporate into my photo.

And the compass and composition in the photo before me was so beautiful (check out my friend's facebook cover page if you want to see).  But when I asked my friends if I could borrow a pretty compass a friend made me LOL by asking "As opposed to an ugly compass?!"

Alas no one had one for me, so I spent the day trying to pair my ugly, doesn't really work, children's compass/binoculars with that which I find beautiful in my life.

But she wasn't very cooperative.
I only got a few shots of her playing with the compass before she started crying about the back pack.

Do you see the compass in the lower left?  She was more interested in playing with her travel tripod.  I figure she couldn't go on a trip without her camera.
This one was almost what I envisioned, but oops!  Where is the compass?  Turns out she was sitting on it.  But by then she was done being on the bed.  I think she thought I wanted her to nap...with all that stuff?

So I called in my professional model.
And this was a close third choice, but you can't really tell he is holding a compass...plus I really wanted to hand off "baby" to the first time mom photographer following me not "child."

So we moved downstairs away from that whole bed/nap risk.
Which did bring Sweet Pea a lot of glee as she immediately started playing peek-a-boo with the maps and her big brother, SnapDragon.
And while SnapDragon did a great job of keeping the compass exposed as one would want in product shots, it just didn't quite seem like the natural incorporation I wanted.
And when we moved to here I knew we were close to done...But I thought okay, take a picture of SnapDragon lying on a map with a compass in his hand...maybe that will work.
But of course when I went to snap another to go for a deeper depth of focus (having both SnapDragon's eye and the compass in focus) Sweet Pea got a fresh wind in her sails.
Which led to this gleeful, but not exactly what I was going for, shot.  Sure you can see just a hint of Sweet Pea's smile and a hint of the compass in SnapDragon's hand but no.
And when they both put their heads down and Sweet Pea started fake snoring (the funniest, cutest thing ever!), I knew it was over.  So I went back to the 5th photo I took, played with it for awhile, and posted it.
I guess I could have let the kids play in peace that last hour.

Favorite Photo Friday -- The Swing

I had a week where I had time to write and nothing interesting (even to me!) to say.  Now I have a lot to say and no time to write.  The sun is out and it is time to play.
We got a new swing for the backyard swing set.  She only looks serious when it slows down.
Why we waited so long to buy a baby swing I do not know.

She didn't care who pushed her...
...as long as it was fast and high...
...which thrilled Sunflower as she still isn't positive Sweet Pea likes her.
But at some point Sunflower wants to swing, too...and while she is diligently "practicing that way to swing that Major Awesome taught me" sometimes she wants to be pushed, too.
So everyone had fun when big brother began pushing both girls.
Or there is the moment when Sweet Pea laughs and laughs and laughs because big brother is on top of the swing set looking down at her.
"Silly brother!" says Sunflower.
Of course the swing isn't the only thing to do.

There is the roam around the yard option.
And the slides.  But really there is no doubt.
The swing is a big hit!

Favorite Photo Friday

This week it is easy to decide; this is definitely my favorite photo from this week.  Though the kiss she gave the bear right after it almost made me swoon from the sweetness.

Favortie Photo Friday

Often my favorite photo is not my best photo.
I'd rather capture real moments than perfect moments as we are not a perfect family.  (If I could always capture real moments with perfect technique, I'd be okay with that, but alas sometimes the real moments pass too quick and I'm too slow.)

But that is okay, my boy has my back.  He always shows me real.
This real moment brought to you by the fact that "she ruined our shot, Mom!"

It's okay, SnapDragon.  How else are we to know that we were on our way home from picking blackberries?

Update

I think there are probably a few wondering how we are doing and saying it is going well (which it is) doesn't really give a full picture of life with a new baby, but typing is one of the hardest things to find time to do.  Especially an update post.  I don't want to give an unrealistic portrayal of our life, but neither do I want to sound like I'm complaining when the issues we are having are pretty typical to adding a new baby into the house--sleep and sister jealousy.  In fact, I am so happy that to point out the things that are hard seems kind of petty.

Actually Sweet Pea sleeps okay in that she likes her crib fine and doesn't need to be held while sleeping or rocked to sleep (though sometimes I try, because who doesn't want to hold a sleeping baby if you can?)  But if she naps it is for 20 minutes here or there and at night she typically wakes up anywhere between 2 and 5 times.  She doesn't need much when she wakes and sometimes she self-soothes herself back to sleep within seconds, but her shrieking cries jolt us both awake, so no one is sleeping straight through the night.  So we are tired.

And it isn't so much that the girls are jealous, though Sweet Pea will sometimes army crawl over to me if she sees me holding Sunflower, as it is just taking them time to adjust to each other.  It was hard for Sunflower for us to be gone and when we came home we couldn't give her all the attention she needed.  She was and is very excited about the baby, but baby is less excited about having a big sister (she warmed up to the boys quickly, but Sunflower still kind of scares her a little.)  Somedays it feels like I am a football player...with Sweet Pea the football and me trying to keep her from the other team, Sunflower.  Now Sunflower isn't doing anything mean...she is just very aggressive in her mothering...Sister, Time to sleep (push her into lying down); Here's your chew (cram it into her mouth), etc.  But yesterday Sunflower said, "I am not mad you went to China...I'm glad you went to bring me back baby sister...I guess she is for all of us."  So we are making good progress.

Then there is so much good.  Sweet Pea had her medical check and blood draws, etc.  The only concern the doctor has is hardened ear wax, so she gets to have eardrops a few times a day to loosen it up.  He doesn't think we need to have her evaluated for PT of any kind as each day she is learning new things.  We'll reevaluate that again at her next check-up in July, but it seems unlikely that she'll need any therapy at this time.  She came to us unable to even sit up on her own completely, but now she plays hours that way, she can roll over, crawl (not on her knees, but she is starting to try them), she can pick-up little foods and feed herself, she could hold her bottle if we wanted her to, she plays with toys, goes to get the toy she wants, and puts them in her mouth, etc.  She is even starting to pull herself up on things a little and can stand if holding on.  The only thing she cannot do that I think she maybe should be able to do is go from a lying down position to a sitting position.  She even turns at the sound of her name which Huckleberry couldn't do at nine months, so it completely astounds me (especially since I had trouble using her American name in China and sometimes still just call her Sweet Pea.)

On the attachment front it is still too early to really tell for somethings, but it seems to be going exactly as it should.  It would take a whole 'nother post to really explain what we see and do, but everyday we get a new sign that she is settling in.  I once read a blog post that stated, "you don't know what you don't have/is missing from the relationship until it comes."  An example was I just assumed Sweet Pea was used to being fed facing out as that was the only way she would take a bottle, but then I saw her Nanny feed her in the traditional pose, and then a few weeks ago, Sweet Pea snuggled with me for the first time while eating, looking me in the face.  It wasn't something that had worried me, but now that it is different, I see that she was a bit vigilant and it is a good thing that she is starting to relax.  She has giggled a lot less than she did in China since we've been home and only in the last few days has it been easy to get her to giggle by tickling and playing, so I don't think we've yet seen the fully relaxed Sweet Pea, but I believe we are getting there and will get there.  And that is very, very good.
So I complain about my messy house, as I have for 12 years, and I spend my days playing with my girls trying to find the right balance to who needs me when.  Now that Sweet Pea is more relaxed and plays happier, I am able to devote a little more to Sunflower and more importantly Sweet Pea will let Sunflower play with her without screaming which is all that Sunflower wanted.  And someday maybe I'll be able to blog and not just because I'm up early AND my husband is staying home from work on Fridays.
